Duck Breed Focus - Welsh Harlequin

· What made you decide to get this breed?
A-Auto sexing of ducklings, dual purpose bird, could hatch there own eggs, rare breed in need of farmers to take up there cause.
· Do you own them for fun? Breeding? Some other purpose?
A-Simple answer is yes! We first got ducks when we found out that my tumor wasn't cancerous. After a few months and learning that we loved ducks and most importantly that our neighbor's dogs didnt care for them(since they are all of our chickens after breaking into our yard and then into our enclosed chicken coop!) we paid the big bucks to get them from a breeder in Oregon. We have enjoyed their eggs and are learning how to cook their meat properly and we plan on breeding this spring provided we have any healthy enough. My flock has taken a hard hit in the last few months. Weirdly enough it's only really effected my Welsh Harlequins and that concerns me greatly!

The two main reasons we got them are that they are always listed as being very calm and very good layers. I really like their calm nature. They get along with my other animals and are very easy to work with and around, without all the fuss I had with the other breeds I have had. I also like the way they look and how it changes seasonally.

IS there any one in North Central Illinois that sell baby Welsh harlequin ducklings or hatching eggs? I am looking to buy a male and 2 female ducklings or 4 hatching eggs. Ilive inNorth Central Illinois. In LaSalle County. Thank you!

If you don't find anyone there, I would recommend Metzer Farms. You can have your ducklings sexed and get exactly what you want and their WHs are beautiful and well tempered.

Try posting in your state thread and or post on Craigs List. If hatching eggs remember half of them will be males.and there is always the chance not all the eggs hatch. So do a couple extra. With four eggs you could easily end up with three males and one female

I know I am worried about getting eggs and having all boys. I've tried to go through Cackle Hatchery but they dont sex the ducklings!!! I am going to try on the web sites again but two of my local farm stores are getting ducklings intoday and I am hoping they will be in!

I only have one hen at the moment, but I adore her. I didn't socialize her as much as I should have when she was young, but the breed is just so naturally calm and gentle. She's also fairly quiet. I can't speak as far as the egg laying, because I have several hens of different breeds that all lay in the same spots, so I don't know which belongs to her. I originally ordered from Metzer farms and got a different hen, but she unexplainably passed at 8 weeks old. I then ordered another female later last summer and she came with a pigeon toe. She gets around okay now, but she also has episodes with her breathing that come and go, and her quack doesn't sound right at all. I love her, but I hope to figure out what is going on. I'd love to order another hen this spring. One WH isn't enough! I like to own several different breeds, but they've always been one of my favorites simply because I think they're stunning and have awesome personalities.

Here is my girl, Myrtle:
