It's been a LONG time since I've been a member of a forum, but when you need to talk to people who know about something the majority of your friends don't "get", well...you seek those folks out :)

My husband and I just recently purchased a home on a little over 4 acres with goals of starting with chickens then later getting goats, and (probably 5+ years from now) a donkey and a horse or two. We're optimistic to obtain some nearby acreage to be able to sustain those future wants.

Anyway, I'm here to ask questions and continue learning. We already have a coop on the property, but it needs some work before I can move anyone in.

Thanks for having me and can't wait to jump in with both feet!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. All of us here at BYC have OCD (Obsessive Chicken Disorder) and love to talk chickens.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting the additional acreage.

Hello :frow and welcome to BYC!

Hi!

Welcome! It's always good to research and prepare to avoid challenges in the future. You might like to type in your state in this link to meet neighbors and get help with local husbandry questions you may have.

Feel free to have a look and post!
Have a look at the different forum categories (other pets and livestock as well!) by clicking the drop down arrow in the forum navigation bar. You might like to research breeds that suit your needs, housing and your climate as well. Here's a great page, if you'll scroll down on your left, you can refine a search for best breeds.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone :)

We're still some time away from adding chickens which is why I'm here. The only breed I know I want are some silkies. I'll definitely be browsing the breeds to see what else I'd like to add, since I don't really want just one type. I have all fall/winter to plan :) I have coop questions so I'll make a new post in the right section in the next day or so as well. Since it needs some sprucing up, I want to make sure I make the best use of what already exists.

Thanks again! <3

. Silkies are a very popular breed. You may like to visit the "Silkie thread," to learn a lot more about them.

You may also want to check out the coops forum above, to see if your coop has what it takes to gets birds through the seasons.
