Hi! My wife and I and three other folks are homesteading on about 5 acres on the Kitsap Peninsula in western Washington. We've only been here since June, however our first chicken flock has been established. We picked up a dozen chicks on the day they arrived at a local farm store. I chose a mix of 6 breeds selected for varied egg color and foraging reputation. One chick didn't make it through 3 days, but the rest are thriving and really fun to get to know.
We re-purposed a beautiful 1977 VW bus that had been my business vehicle (dogmobile--I'm a dog trainer) as our chick brooder.
These chickens will lay eggs for us and work the soil in chicken tractors. They will be treated as valued working partners and will not be slaughtered for meat. Besides, they are becoming pets; I spent a lot of time letting them get used to me while in the brooder and once they moved into their coop that I could walk into, some of them started landing on my head, shoulders and arms. They all have eaten from my hand from week two.
Our first chicken tractor is an A-frame model taken from Harvey Ussery's "Small-Scale Poultry Flock," which is an outstanding primary reference for starting a flock. These photos are pre-roof.
Here are a couple photos from week three. Can anyone name the 6 breeds from the photos?
