I went on vacation a few days ago and came home this morning. I found the one of my 3 cream legbar pullets cut part of her wattle so part of it is barley hanging on. (I use my chickens for eggs and show but am not one to cull a bird if I can not use it. by this I mean that I don't care if I can't show it because it has a chuck of skin missing.) She is still laying and as far as I can tell eating and drinking. She is perky too. I separated her temporarily so the other chickens don't peck at it. It seems to have been there for a couple of days because the skin is hard, black, and dead. I am worried about infection more than anything. I rinsed it and put a mix of aquafor and antibiotic cream on it to make her more comfortable. She doesn't seem too bothered with me touching it but I feel bad for her. Is there anything else that I can do? Thank you so much.

It is healing well. I would put her back in the flock as they don't appear to be pecking at the wattle. Reintroducing her later may be more of a problem.

I looked more closely at your pictures, and I would be tempted to remove the 'tag', but that's just me. It may dry up and drop off on its own. I'd continue to apply the antibiotic cream.

It is back with the other chickens, and I agree. I think that I will give it a few days and if it doesn't come off on it's own I will remove it. What is the best and most humane way to do this? Also, what sings of infection should I be watching for? Like I said, I was not home to clean it when it happened, so the infection could have already entered. Should I be worried about this? Thanks again

(P.S. still acting normal, very active. It broke out of it's cage that I separated it into

Note the rounded, light tissue adjacent to the darkened tissue. That is healthy, healing tissue. If it were infected, it would be oozing and pussy. She is going to be fine.
