Ducklings not externally pipping

Feeling cautiously optimistic.

Baby #2 arrived early this morning! Umbilical area was a bit bloody, but not too bad. Wasn't gushing out or anything. Dabbed some cornstarch on it and looks like it's on it's way to drying up.

His vitals seem good. He's got a good peep and is very responsive. Not trying to get around too much yet. Hope this is normal. (I think the last hatchling may have been a little abnormal by trying to do laps and the incubator right away! Lol!)

I now have him under my brooder with the other duckling. Hoping he will show the new duckling the ropes! They are already snuggled up together!

The kids want to name this one "Butt Head" because he was butt first in the egg! I think we will stick with "Buddy."
 
I bet someone slips and calls him butthead by accident!!!!
You got both ends of the spectrum with these 2. But sluggish is normal for a bit too... Hatching is tough work! If you notice him not perking up, you can give him some electrolytes. I've even used Gatorade in a pinch!!

Here is Buddy! He's come a long way since this morning. Still working on balance, but getting around very well now!

Pretty sure he is a mix of one of our gray runners and our female buff. He is a beautiful black with yellow under his neck and beak.

i was wondering, did your ducklings fully absorb their yolk sacs? i have a duckling that has internally pipped early at 24 days and it had been 24 hours so i gave him a safety hole and hes very loud and active and i was worried because my other ducklings took a couple days to absorb their sac completely but i dont know how many days it took them because i didnt even realize that they were growing!
 
I don't think completely absorbed their yolk sack at the time of internal pipping, though they did by the time I assisted them completely out of their shell. After I poked the air hole, I left them for about 24 hrs before I assisted again. I did check on them every couple hours, over night, to make sure they were not in distress. The 2nd one I assisted had a bit of a bloody umbilical cord when it came out, so it might have been a little soon, but a dab of cornstarch on it and he was fine.

Gosh, these two babies are nearly the size of my adult ducks already!!! Man, do they grow fast!

I have an incubator FULL of duck eggs ready to hatch in the next week for a science project! We will see how this batch goes!!!!
