I have been on this site quite a bit over the past few months and I turn to you guys for information all the time. I just joined today so I will give a little background. I have quite the hobby farm going on here. We started out with a little bunny we picked up from out local feed store back in January of this year. Then we ended up with a second and then a third and earlier in the summer we took in a rescue bunny. So now we have 4 bunnies, all female. Then on a trip to get hay and feed for the bunnies we got our first 2 ducks. I thought they were Indian Runners because of the way they stood so tall and as soon as we got them home they put their heads and necks down and we realize we had Pekin ducks. We ended up with a male and a female. Their names are Hussy and Drake. Hussy got her name because she is just always seems to be in a bad mood. She chases after Drake just honking and pecking at his rear end and that can go on all day. In the last week she started laying eggs. She has successfully laid 5 eggs with 2 mishaps yesterday. Not sure what she was thinking. She laid one in the early afternoon that was nowhere near ready and it was just like a deflated water balloon and then she did it again yesterday evening. It was much smaller and not quite the mess as the first one. She hasn't laid another one yet this morning. I am guessing she won't lay another one today. She has NO interest in the eggs at all. She scatters them all over her pen and no matter how many times a day I put them back into her nest she still just scatters them over and over again. She is not broody at all and couldn't care less about them. She and Drake have been doing their "ducky thing" for about 6 weeks now so we figured eggs would start showing up soon and they did.
Then we have 2 Muscovy ducks from another trip to the feed store. The owner of the feed store begged us to buy them so he wouldn't have to come in every day over the weekend to care for them. He gave them to us for $5 for both of them so we would take them. They are strange little creatures. One is black and the other white and I am not sure of their sex yet. They are very timid and even though we have had them for 2 months or more they are still terrified of us.
We also picked up 3 Egyptian goslings a month or so ago and I think they are about 4 months old. They are a hoot to watch! We clipped their wings so they can't fly but they are sure trying! I am pretty sure we ended up with one male and 2 females. I think that because of their behavior and their size. One is much larger than the others and the larger one stands watch most of the day while the other 2 nap or eat. He seems to just have their safety in mind. He is always looking up to the sky and catches sight of every little bird and butterfly that goes by.
We also have 2 Red Sexlink chicks. They were given to my daughter by our neighbor who raises chickens. They are about 6 weeks old or maybe a little older. My daughter, who is 8, just adores her little chicks and she is such a great chickie mommy!
Last but not least.. we have 2 hound dogs. They are very interested in all the other creatures running all over the yard and if they could only get the chance I am sure they would love to make a meal out of any or all of them. They are Redtick/Bluetick mix and they are 3 years old. We had to build a large run for them to live in and basically had to build a moat around the fence to keep them in the yard. They kept escaping the yard and at one point they were gone for 7 days and nearly starved to death before we finally got them back. They have huge necks and small heads so keeping a collar and/or harness on them is impossible. We had to lay cement under their fence to keep them from digging out and now they are trying to climb the fence to get out, thankfully with no success YET! They are hunters at heart so they are very sad that they are not allowed to "play" with the ducks and geese.
That is our little hobby farm in a nutshell. I am looking to see how others build homes for their feathered loved ones and I also want to make sure that these babies will all be taken care of for the winter here in Georgia. Luckily we have short winters here but they can get pretty frigid and I am wanting to learn more about winter care and this whole egg laying and hatching thing.
