Should under the coop be closed off or left open?

Looks like your chickens will have a fun landscape to play in. If you ever get eggs under the shed just attach a little hand shovel to a stick.

A friend put this together when he gave me a pen with a low door so I wouldn't have to crawl in.

Attimus, that's a great little contraption! What we may do is temporarily block under the coop until they start laying consistently in the nest boxes.
Sorry for the slow reply, the chicks and continued chicken coop building have kept things busy- we're on day 28 of chick-dom.

We are in Alaska so we closed ours off to help keep in heat. Plus i really didn't want to try to go under to get eggs.

What a beautiful coop! I can only imagine how cold it gets. Here and there we see the teens, but usually mid-twenties is the low end- downright tropical. ;) Still a while before we'll see eggs- so in the mean time might be netting the bottom off so they don't get any bright ideas.

Chickens look great. They grow so fast once they aren't little fluff balls.
Have you considered just giving them a few feet of space under the side with the run attached. Nothing more than say an arms length. Chickens always appreciate a good spot for a bath.

Boy do they! It's fun taking pictures every couple of days because they change so much.
I like your idea. Here in the northwest we are usually talking mud, though this summer was so dry I almost forgot what mud looked like. A little spot underneath may be their only chance at real actual dry dust year round. Bet with the aviary net over the run it's less of a risk that a pocket would become a trap- maybe a corner so there's more than one way out.

We've been using a mix of shavings and the compressed pellets. As the pellets break apart it leaves the closest thing to dust they've seen so they use it for dust bathing-- only caught the very end of the communal dusting. =)
