Duck Laying Question

Thread Starter

Hello BYC - we have a female Khaki Campbell that just started to lay...but as I am new to ducks, something is raising concern with my husband and I. The female laid eggs for 5 days in a row- all beautiful and healthy looking first eggs. But now, as of today, she has not been laying 4 days in a row. Normally our chickens will go maybe a day or two without laying, but is this normal for the female duck to stop for 4 days?

Any help or advice on this would be much appreciated, as we are worrying about our sweet duck! Thank you for your time.

I have a similar problem We have 3 one year old KC's: One male and 2females. The females have laid one egg each since we bought them last October. We hand raised two of their ducklings this past spring and have housed them in a different section of the coup. Now they have finished molting and NOBODY is laying any eggs! They are still eating the same kind of layer pellets. How long do KC's take to start laying after they molt??

@dustybin My Runners may take a couple of months or more, especially if they molt going into fall or winter.  The cold affects mine more than daylight hours, though daylight plays a part.

What do they eat, and how much?  I mean, do you measure out an amount or do they have free choice?  And what supplemental feed do they get?  mealworms?  foraging? sprouted wheat?

Do they get free choice calcium?

@HomesteaderWife  - what do yours eat?  What sources of calcium do they have?  What other ducks do you have?  What is her housing situation?

some possibilities include - she's hiding eggs, being overmated, beginning to be egg bound, not getting enough of some nutrient.

Hey there friends! My duck normally lays all her eggs in her house overnight, and we find them in the morning. Luckily, a day after my post, she began steadily laying an egg again every day! When she was not laying, I did check for hidden eggs (none were found).
