Hi everyone,
im new here (please be nice)
wee.gif

i have a male and female jap pair of quails. and i am getting more females in the next few days.
my questions are :
the male mates with the female every so often, does that mean all of her eggs are fertile? or only the next one laid after the mating?
i brought a Janoel 10 incubator off ebay, have done some research and found out the temperature reading is a bit crappy, so have gone and brought a good thermometer and hygrometer (spelling??) so i can keep an eye on temps and humidity,
has anyone used this brand before?
i guess i am after any advice on breeding and hatching . i have been researching like crazy but will always love some new advice.
Many thanks
Mel

Hi, Mel, welcome to BYC. Birds have the ability to store sperm; therefore, one mating will result in fertile eggs for a minimum of two weeks - assuming that the male has a good sperm count.

The day after the first mating her eggs should be fertile. They will be fertile for at least a week, with fertility dropping after the first week. But he will continue to breed with her so she will stay fertile.

has anyone used this brand before? No but it's good to stabilize the incubator before setting eggs. Coturnix eggs are very forgiving so don't fret if your incubator is off a degree.

i have hatched 4 batches from the janoel 12. i just set it on 38 and haven't had a problem with the temperature.
wrap a towel around the sides and it wont need to heat as much.
humidity is an issue, i also find the fan very strong and the bubs that are right under it get stuck after pipping so when you set your eggs for lockdown try to set them in a spot with less direct airflow. for humidity I use some small jello cups with water under the tray, keep them about half full, then i put in an extra one and fill them all at lockdown.

just make sure you have the lid on correctly and the hygro/thermometers arent propping the lid open too far
