boiled eggs as "fake"?

I read the threads concerning using golf balls and other items as fake eggs to encourage hens as to where to lay.

My hens are approx. 25 weeks old and have yet to lay. I am considering the use of a boiled egg in a nest box - will this suffice as a fake egg? I don't intend to let it stay there and rot, but just serve as encouragement as to where to lay.

Do you advise the use of a boiled egg as a fake?

Thanks,

Unfortunately there is no way to know how long you will need the "bait" in the nest, so using artificial items is best, imo, to avoid the issues of breakage, etc.
