We have a chicken that has been battling a bad leg for one month. I feel as though we've done everything. We've kept her in a dog kennel in the coop with other chickens, we've kept her in a dog kennel in our house where it's warmer. We've given her warm baths, fed her children's aspirin, increased the protein in her diet, decreased the protein in her diet, we've kept her on harder surfaces and really soft surfaces...and nothing is working. As of yesterday - her toes on her bad leg have completely curled up and she has stopped eating and drinking. I'm looking for any final thoughts on what else we might be able to do to help this chicken. I don't want to see her suffer and the fact that we have seen no progress, leaves me wondering what hope might be left for her. Thanks in advance.
Chicken with Bad Leg - Getting Worse
Sorry that she is getting worse. Have you treated her with daily vitamins in her water? Sometimes riboflavin deficiency can cause leg weakness, curling toes, and walking on hocks. Mareks disease is another cause for this. Since she has stopped eating, I would lean more toward Mareks. If you lose her or deceide to put her out of her misery, then I would probably get a necropsy done by the state vet to look for Mareks. Here is a link for that:
