Duck with swollen abdomen and losing feathers

Thread Starter

Greetings,

I have an Indian Runner of indeterminate age. She was a pretty good layer until mid summer and then the shells got thin and brittle and then she quit  I figured she was getting old.  Then her belly started to swell up and now it is pretty bad.  Yesterday I brought her in the house for a warm soak and exam. Her vent is ok but the entire belly is like a water balloon  So my diagnosis was water belly and heart or liver problems OR broken eggs inside.  BUT her back is naked in a couple spots (might be from the the drake or over preening) and none of her feathers are maturing  She feels like she is covered in pin feathers and they only grow to the size of songbirds feather and then fall out. Her eyes are bright, the feathers on her neck and head are normal and she is pooping just fine.  I'm not taking her to a vet,

Any thoughts? The belly seems pretty straightforward but the whole feather thing really throws me

You could try posting in full detail at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread.  I'm not sure anything could help her at this point in time.

@FlockMama    it really does sound serious i am sorry to say, only a vet could give a diagnosis though. Maybe the feather problem is just from poor health, What do you feed? are you offering any additional vitamins or protein [when mine are in molt which is now] I give them extra protein in the form of cat and dog kibble high quality and dried meal worms.along with their feed.

As for her belly unless your wiling to take her to a vet who will see a duck and I know most won't other than supportive care warm baths and TLC I guess it's just a waiting game.  I know some will drain fluid with chickens but I haven't seen anyone do it with ducks

How does her poop look and is she eating and drinking at all?
