Hi all. I have my silkies in their run most of the day. It is completely surrounded by 1/2 hardware cloth...seems very secure to me. I'm wondering if Hawks could reach their talons in & kill a chicken. I'm asking because on two separate occasions, a saw a hawk on the ground going around & around the run tormenting my chicks. They are 6 weeks old & they don't have any older hens to "teach" them to maybe run into the coop if they are feeling threatened. Should I worry? Thanks!!

YOU SHOULD NOT WORRY.. As long as the hawk cant get inside the run, then your chickens are safe. Your 1/2 inch hardware cloth is generally good enough against most predators. It seem that there has been an elevated inquiry as to hawks at this time of year. My thinking is that the readily available food supply for hawks is diminished at this time... Hunger leads to more drastic measures. I follow some other threads that state ... hawks trying desperately to get to chickens.. One visited my yard on Saturday. My free range pigeons flew away as fast as the wind allowed. They returned , but hours later. Not sure where they flew to hide, but I guess they wanted to give hawk enough time to move on. My chickens were in semi covered run.. Semi covered , as how I have tarps cover portions of run area, but there are open areas as well. What hawk does not see does not tempt her? him?
WISHING YOU BEST
