Children holding baby chicks

I seen so many times people say children elderly and people with week immune systems should now hold baby chicks. Then again I know and have seen a ton of threads saying they let their kids hold them and they hold them also. Just washing their hands afterwards. I'm so confused I'm a new baby chick owner of 15 ISA Browns and I have a 3 yr old daughter who loves to pet them but I have and making her wear gloves when we're in there. As u know it's very hard to keep the big gloves on even if I buy the smallest. Family members have told me that they all grew up playing with theirs. Idk does anyone have any advise
 
Unless your child has a weaken immune system, washing after handling should be fine, that being said I grew up on a farm and have probably ate a lot of things that would make most cringe, I personally think that such things builds immunity and can actually be beneficial. Do what you are comfortable with.
 
Thanks I think the same way u do and how I grew up. Just never had chickens or been around them til now.
 
Since many strains of flu come down through birds I figure it's the reason we are hardly ever sick, where my brothers and their kids are sick from one thing or another all year around.

I went through chemo last year, I was told not to near my chickens, that lasted a month and I began caring for them as I was able to, never told the doctor, I suffered no ill effects and it gave me something to get out of bed for.
 
There have been many studies and they conclude that children are far healthier when allowed to go outside and play in the dirt and have pets. It builds a healthy immune system in a developing body.

Your baby chicks are probably not carrying any sort of disease that is going to make your three-year old sick, unless she is already sick. As Old Hen points out, simply washing ones hands after handling chicks will pretty much take care of any germs that might prove to be problematic, whether they be from the common cold virus or something more sinister.

Trying to handle chicks with cumbersome gloves is a bit ridiculous, and I would be concerned my child would become fearful of handling any animals as she gets older and become a germ paranoid. Teaching the good habit of washing hands frequently after handling anything that poops is the best thing you can do for a child, and then let the child be free to be a child with all the wonderful experiences of discovery that being a child entails.
 
Old Hen u have a good point. I know families like thats. Always sick going to doc but dont get to act like kids like we used to all do when we were younger. Sorry I replied right back but somehow it went to support and not this thread.

Have your kiddo wash her hands after handling the birds. And please, please don't let her kiss them or put them in her mouth. That right there is how so many folks came down with salmonella.
