Last fall, one of our hens took a long time coming out of her molt and then we realized that something was wrong when the molting stopped. She had lice and it had eaten away a lot of her incoming feathers. This year she’s covered in quills (that’s good!), but what’s emerging from them is a very thin strand, less than an inch at most. Since I haven’t seen a featherless chicken molt before, is this what a normal feather would look like as it emerges?
I haven’t seen any evidence of lice or worsening of her feathers since we discovered it.
