I answered a craigslist ad from a woman who had Muscovy ducklings to sell. We made arrangements and I went and picked them up September 22nd. She said they were born on August 4. Four were decidedly larger then the others and I assumed, drakes. I paid and loaded them into a giant kennel, strapped them into the bed of the pickup covered with a tarp to keep the wind out. As we were heading down the lane we watched a Cayuga and Pekin mosey across the lane in front of the truck. The owner assured us that those two drakes weren't involved in the fathering because they're not 'into the ducks'. I am the trusting sort but I remember seeing the vivid iridescent colors of the beautiful Cayuga now reflecting in the iridescent colors of my Muscovies. Or is my mind playing tricks on me? When I begin to doubt, I look at images of other Muscovy ducks and drakes and all I see are my beautiful girls and boys!
Two of the four early drakes are now two of the smallest and flying already. My certain drakes are twice the size of the ducks. Most of them don't have wing feathers yet.
I made a gallery but can't seem to figure out how to link it. I'll edit if I do.
Thanks to anyone and everyone who can lend an opinion on if my ducks are Muscovy or mixed...
I have a lot more pictures of the ducks on my gallery in my profile if you'd like to see more.
