Any guesses as to if my Rhode Island Red is a pullet or rooster? She/he is bigger and has a much larger comb than my other chickens that are the same age. She/he is about 8 weeks old. Also, would like to know what breed is this black and white pullet (in the front)? She is about 7 weeks old. I thought she was a barred rock, but she has very different coloring than the other one I have.

Pullet production red. The other bird I can't tell by photo if it has yellow or white legs. I also can't quite see if it's a single or rose comb. Here's the skinny of it as you answer the questions, if white legs it's cuckoo Marans. If yellow legs and single comb barred Plymouth Rock; rose comb is Dominique.

If it is a barred Plymouth Rock then the poor barring is due to being hatchery quality stock. There is quite a bit of variation in hatchery barred and none ever as crisp as breeder stock.

Both birds are pullets. The first is a Production Red and the second one honestly looks like a mix to me. Her coloring looks more like that of a Cuckoo Marans, but Marans have white legs and hers are yellow. Hatchery birds often have odd color and poorer markings, so I would guess that the mystery bird is just a hatchery-quality Barred Plymouth Rock.

I agree.

I agree, too.
