Making Sure Your Rooster Knows You Are Top Dog

I have two roos- both were supposed to be pullets. I definitely agree growing up with older birds is good for the roo! My older one, 'Chucky', is a 3 1/2 year old Golden laced Wyandotte and the younger, 'Ozzy' is a 9 month old black Australorp. Chucky has had his moments- he is sometimes aggressive but mostly not, so I have tolerated it. Ozzy is so terrified of Chucky that he isn't aggressive toward anyone. Chucky had been fine for months, then yesterday while I was giving them some birdseed as a treat, he tried to spur my shin. I wasn't doing anything different than I do any other day when I give them food, so who knows what goes through that tiny little brain.

I'm trying a deterrent I hope will work.

When my roo attacks me, I grab him and hold him upside down by his feet. I carry him to an isolation coop with food and water. He remains there til the next morning. There is no roost there.

I'll keep you posted. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Some cocks and cockrels will learn to be polite, but may still challenge every human that shows up. It's worth trying two or three times, max, but after that it's VERY unlikely to change his behavior. Best to invite him to dinner... Mary
