How do I get a good breed

In order to get a good breed of bird you must do your research. Know what you want whether it'd be egg production, meat production, show quality or just pets. There are certain breeds that are great egg layers such as the Leghorn, Sex-Link or Minorca that would not make a great meat breed. There are also birds that are used as Dual-Purpose that are good good for both meat and eggs.

Good luck and Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html that can help you select the best breeds for your purposes. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't purchase your chicks from Murray, the chick selector is still a useful tool. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Welcome to BYC!

Michael OShay has left you with two wonderful resrouces/links above.  Have you thought through what your purpose(s) in keeping your flock will be - ie meat, eggs, both, pets only ?  There are so many breeds (and hybrids) to choose from - each with their own set of characteristics that could make them a good or bad match for what you are looking for.  Figuring out what you want out of your birds will be the first step in deciding which birds suit you.

Where are we going, and why are we in this hand basket?

Did a moth know that the flame was going to change her life forever, or did she simply fly towards that heated embrace, knowing it would offer her something she couldn't give herself? In the end, the answer didn't really matter. The moth had never wanted the choice. -Joey W. Hill-

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

This article in the Learning Center may be helpful to you:

Once you decide which breed (or breeds) you want, buy from a reputable breeder or hatchery, don't get scammed by someone looking to unload mis-identified breeds, all roosters, or ill/diseased chickens on you.

If you need help or have questions, always feel free to ask. Good luck!
