  • Rhode Island Red about 13-15 weeks old
  • we've had for 6 weeks with 3 other chickens
  • this past week is the first time we noticed the chicken looking like this
  • head looks deformed
  • eye looks like it has sunken down, still has moisture in it
  • chicken doesn't flinch when anything happens on that side - it can't see from that side
  • chicken keeps neck lowered/ buried in body and stays closer to walls
  • not sure if its tumor growing in the head or another common disease- can't find anything online about it
  • "normal" looking eye side it can see from:

deformed side

any thoughts or help?

Welcome to BYC. Is the side of his head poofy like there could be air under the skin, as in a leaking air sac? Or does it feel like a tumor in the upper eye? Have you seen sticky eye drainage or pus from the affected eye? Some respiratory infections such as MG or coryza can cause swollen sinuses, but I can't see any pus in the picture, and the swelling looks more like it is coming from inside pushing the eye downward. That seems a little more like a possible tumor. You could try an antibiotic like Tylan 50 injectable given by mouth 1/2 ml twice a day for 5 days to see if the swelling goes down. Does he have a bad odor? I think this could be one of a number of things, so I hope we can help you get to the bottom of it.

The side of the head is not poofy.
No sticky eye drainage or pus.
No bad odor.
Thank you for the response and suggestions. The hen, Dece, hasn't gained any weight and is still getting around with her head bent. We'll keep monitoring and take some medical actions.
