My grandpa had raised chickens for many, many years and this past summer he helped me start my own little flock! I have six silly hens: 5 black sex linked and 1 red sex linked. They are Honey Bun, Blanche Devereaux, Lucille, Naomi, Esmerelda, and Miss Selena. Last but not least, I have a handsome red sex linked rooster named Pedro. My main purpose for raising backyard chickens is fun :) and then eggs. 3/6 of my hens are laying and they just started this week!! We found their little nest beside a bush in some straw with 4 eggs in it (it had probably been there a day or two before it was found), and I marked those and then yesterday there were 3 new eggs, and today there have been two so far in their nesting box in the coop (I placed an egg in there to encourage it). I live on 11 acres and my chickens are free-range 95% of the time. I'm currently working with my dad on expanding their coop so we can add some new members down the road! I'm excited to learn from others and have a chance to talk to some other crazy chicken ladies & gentlemen!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on getting your own flock started :celebrate It sounds like you are really enjoying the whole experience a,d getting some eggs to boot. Finding those first eggs really is great and it never gets boring collecting them!! You have some lovely names there for your flock.

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I love your chickens' names.) Sex Link hens are laying machines. You should get loads of eggs from those girls.) I especially love the Black Sex Links as mine have been very friendly and have tended to lay my largest eggs with double yolks not being uncommon. Also, I been very happy with the Black Sex Links persistent in laying in really cold winter weather. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. There are a lot of "Blanches" here - Blanche was certainly a character to remember. I think everyone loved that show .
