Hi I'm new to everything chicken. Is it possible to cross a buff orp roo with rir hens? If so what will the offspring be like?

Breeds are a manmade thing. Chickens don’t know breeds, they know boy meets girl. Any rooster of any breed will want to mate any hen of any breed. Yours are close enough in size that should be easy for them. If you had a tiny Serama rooster and a Jersey Giant hen that can be a lot more challenging, though he would still likely try.

Not sure what you mean by “what will they be like”. If you are talking color it will depend on how pure they are but the first generation will probably be some shade of red or maybe orange with black markings, the red somewhere between the two colors of the parents. If you are talking egg laying or meat production, those are inherited traits. What are the adults like? If you are talking personality those are also normally inherited traits but can vary a bit. If the parents are mean nasty critters in behavior, expect the same from their offspring. If the parents are calm docile birds, expect the same. If the parents come from flocks that often go broody, expect pullets that could go broody. If the hens in the parent flocks don’t normally go broody, the pullets probably won’t either.

Glad you found us on the forum and hope you stick around!

When you come to a fork in the road, take it.
