First get his feet cleaned and take a really good look at them. Look for any cuts, scrapes, abrasions, lesions, unusual bumps, unusual coloring (spots), slivers, stickers, swelling, etc. Also feel the legs and thighs to see if they are warm or hot. You want to first rule out Bumblefoot or any cuts that could allow infection to set in. Those things need to be treated as soon as possible.
