First Bumblefoot experience

I think it is looking really good. TRY to keep it as dry as possible. It will heal slower if it is soggy. Even if you have to cage her for a week or so. But it looks really good and you shouldn't have to go back in there if it is kept clean and dry.

Great job and keep us posted! :)

Now my other chicken is showing signs of bumblefoot.... Is this a coincidence or is there something I am doing to cause this? Or not doing to cause this? They free range during the day. Our lot is somewhat wooded..... I will catch her tonight and take a better look but she definitely has a knot between her toes. I've been focusing so much on my sick chicken I haven't been paying her too much attention i guess...

Let me add that I feed my chickens Layena Crumbles and they free range. Occasionally I give them veggie scraps but not too often. They free range during the day.

So this is how my second chicken's foot looked. She had a big knot between her toes that went down a lot. I did open it up for 3 small kernels and a bunch of stringy yellow/gray stuff. The kernels were so deep and embedded. I had to cut the last one out. It was strange. Not nearly as nasty and full of pus like my first chicken. It bled a lot and I had to hold pressure for a good while. I did find some briars in their coop that were buried under the dirt. Should I have left it alone since there was no black scab? Whew I'm exhausted. That is really tough to do. I need wine now.

Ok so I just wanted to post an update. Both of my chickens are doing excellent. It was a rough road. My second chicken got a secondary infection that required a round of IM penicillin. She also had to have her foot opened up a second time on the top between her toes. She is healing very well and has almost made a full recovery. My first chicken has also made a full recovery. Whew. I was quite worried and felt extremely guilty that my girls had to go through this. I found some large briars around their coop and in a tree they like to roost in from time to time. The briars were removed and I hope this won't be a problem again. Thank you so much for all the words of encouragement and advice!!!
