I have a BSL (18 months old) that came out of the coop this morning along with 14 other chickens. I threw out a scoop of chicken scratch and they all started scratching and eating. Everyone was fine and in good shape. 4 hours later I look out of the kitchen window and one of my BSL's is lying on the ground dead. What? I went outside to check on her and the other chickens and found nothing wrong. All the chickens are acting normally and I inspected the dead chicken from top to bottom. Nothing that I could see had killed her. I'll be watching out for the other chickens just incase there is a virus or something going on. Any suggestions?

She may very well have died from a heart attack or some congenital problem. I seriously doubt that you are dealing with an infectious entity.

That is a good possibility. Man, I am going to miss her something terrible. She was an egg laying machine. I was wondering about spiders, specifically black widows. We have them in the wood pile and the chickens eat them all the time. It's never bothered the chickens before but what happens if a black widow bites a chicken? Since I was a kid I watched the chickens eat snakes, mice, spiders and every bug on the planet and it has never hurt one of them.

Well, she wasn't a smoker and got plenty of exercise. She ate what the other chickens ate including some leftover garlic toast from last night. Hell, she laid an egg this morning........must have been a heart attack like you said. I don't think she "offed" herself from depression or anything like that. My wife is going to be upset and we are down 5 or 6 eggs a week now. What a shame.
