Hello, I'm new here.

Right now I am trying to figure out a good design for a coupe for eight chickens. They free roam in my yard all day and I lock them up at night. I am also trying to wade through all of the information on what to feed these chickens. Right now I am using scratch and peck layer GMO soy free etc. etc. feed. But that's going to get expensive with eight chickens compared to two. The more I read the more confused I get. I'm not stuck on organic soy free GMO free etc. but I do want a high-quality food, and I think I figured out that they do need animal protein.
I feed my dog and cat raw food, and my tortoise only gets the greens and weeds. No processed food for my animals. But I also have to be realistic as to what I can afford and so far I haven't found a very affordable option for the chickens yet.
I love this for him and this site. There is a ton of information here. If anybody has suggestions to very helpful threads that would be great. There's a lot of information but it's almost overwhelming. Thanks for the warm welcome everybody. Here's a picture of my three chickens earlier this year looking in to see if I'm going to feed them anything :) they have food available at all times but they think they're starving :)

There's an article in the Learning Center with some ideas on reducing feed costs:

A thread on natural chicken keeping may be something you'd be interested in:

There's so much information available here on BYC, put some topic you are interested in in the Search box (upper left under the logo) and you'll probably get back a whole slew of posts on the subject.

Hope some of that gets you started!
