I have a young Dominique that has been laying daily. I found her perched in the house yesterday afternoon and didn't worry. However I just went out today and she was missing from the flock. I found her in the same spot. She's lethargic, one eye isn't opening and she won't eat or drink now.
We had a hen die just a couple of weeks ago for no apparent reason also.
I can't figure out what is going on.
Any ideas?

Sorry for the slow replies. Did she make it? It sounds like she probably didn't. Since this was the second bird to come down with a potentially deadly disease I would think it is contagious.

I'll preface this with, "not an expert", but it sounds like it could be MG. It causes the eyes to swell shut, breathing problems, lethargy, and often death. Unfortunately, if this is what you're dealing with--or any of the infectious diseases with similar symptoms--then the whole flock probably has it already, and will either need culled, or quarantined. So my advice is to send off your bird for a necropsy to be sure, but proceed with quarantining the entire flock.

PS - I believe the eggs should be safe to eat regardless. But if it is MG you shouldn't hatch the eggs, because they will be born infected.

Is the eye that wouldn't open swollen? Is there any discharge from the eye?

How do the remaining birds in your flock seem? Are they laying well, eating and drinking normally? Any sneezing or coughing?
