Hello everyone! My wife and I are new to the chicken raising world. This site has been very helpful for the first 10 weeks we've had our 5 chickens!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We got chickens about 10 weeks ago. First time chicken raisers!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We have 5 chickens right now. And depending on how many of the 5 are roosters, we may look to add some more.

(3) What breeds do you have? We have two silkies, a black and a white. One Easter-Egger. One Salmon Faverolle. And one Houdan.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Like all new things we start, we tried to do a lot of research and BYC came up quite frequently in answers to our questions!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We recently purchased a house, so that has been our hobby for the last year and half. Also, our two German Shorthaired Pointers, Kipling and Luna!

I'd love to get your guys opinions on the genders of our flock. If this is not the appropriate area to share that, feel free to move this wherever :)

I am pretty sure that my SF is a hen, and very sure my Houdan is a roo as he is already crowing :), but these three I am not entirely sure. What you all think?

These are our two silkies:

This is our EE. I have been leaning toward roo, but holding out hope to be a hen :)

Closer of the white silkie

Closer of the black silkie.

Anyways, nice to meet everyone and thanks for letting us join!

Welcome to BYC, Drew and Laura. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction, and a beautiful flock. Thanks for posting the pics.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Cute flock, thank you for posting!

Hello and welcome. This place is great!! I'm new here and new to chickens also, hatched my first time last month :) a great feeling! HUGE!!
Anyways,I wanted to share a tip I learned about the pullet/cockeral mystery ,and your ee..I wanna say hen, than I go back to the tip I learned, not sure if it's true or not but if their hiney feathers are blunt and kinda arc...with pointy-ish feathers -cockeral
If they are longer/fuller and the feather tips are more rounded at the tips..pullet.i don't think it works for silkies, they have more hairlike coats than other chickens :) but all your flock is beautiful!!! As soon as I get my silkie hen...it's go time for me and the incubator :)
Good luck and welcome!!!
Also this is for like 1 1/2 -2 months of chicks
And older (the tail feather thingy ) ;)

Welcome to Backyard chickens. You can post photos of your birds at "what breed or gender is this." Silkies are among the most difficult breeds to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometimes not till they lay or crow.

Hi Drew & Laura,

I've never had a silkie but Drumstick diva is and if she says it's hard to tell, that's that. Your EE does look kind of roo-ish but I'm not sure based on the photo. Your best bet is checking with the experts over on the breed/gender id forum.

Glad you're enjoying the chickens and that BYC has been helpful to you already. There's a ton of information here and a lot of helpful members so make yourself at home.

Thanks for joining us!
