Hey guys. New to BYC. Thanks for having me. One of my birds has developed a kind of issue. She lays her head back onto her back and walks in circles. Once she is going for a while she walks pretty good but her head is tilted/cocked to the right. She once went to her side and started doing what can best be described as the "Curly move". Like the beloved Curly of the Three Stooges. Just clucking and going around on the ground in a circle. Later she seemed ok. Any ideas before I take her to the vet?

Hello and welcome to our flock!

This looks to me like "wry neck," and there are some great threads here on this. Also, search this site for, "star gazing." Many people have used vitamin therapies with success. Please read the threads as there is a wealth of information in them that will help you. Best of luck!!!
 
My friend had a silkie roo like that. She said it looked like he was break dancing, would walk backwards, sommersault, etc. But, he also had seizures etc. He did recover and she had him 5 years before he passed. At the time it was suggested to give 3 drops of Polyvisol infant drops (no iron) 3 times a day, also a few drops of vit. E squeezed from a capsule, and I'm sorry I can't recall the third thing.

It is also of some benefit if you can gently massage the neck into the correct position , a few times a day. Silkies as a breed are more prone to it because some have vaulted skulls that haven't hardened completely over. A bump or peck to that spot can bring it on. Sometimes it is caused by swelling of the brain, in that case some vets treat with cortisone.

I can't give you a time frame for recovery but, generally the bird does not have to be culled

Try using the Search box located at the top left part of your screen (under the BYC logo) and look up wry neck, there are a lot of posts about it. One I read some time ago was quite lengthy and talked about how a member successfully treated a chick for it. The posts should at least help you determine if that's truly what your bird is or is not having an issue with. Unless you have an aviary vet, a lot of them don't have the necessary experience with chickens to help a lot (based on what I've found and been reported here).

Thanks for all the prompt input. I have some video but apparently I have to upload to YouTube and then embed the link here. Is there another way to get my vid on here w/o going the YT? My girl was doing better this morning 10-31. Still had the head issue but at least she came out and socialized a little. Maybe she stayed in the "hooch" I built them inside their coop. It has a 250W heat lamp to keep them warm as here in WV it was about 32 last night. Thanks again. I think I'll try some PolyVisol. My wife laughed when I mentioned a vet. But hey! Her dogs get to go when they're sick and they don't even give us eggs.

UPDATE: Well my girl, Shanequa, seems to be doing better. Her head is still tilted left, but she hasn't laid it on her back anymore. Also can I get some help with breed on Copper. She's my rust colored hen.
