Quail Open leg fracture

It's been 48 hours. The quail is still eating/drinking/pooping/getting around on 1 foot. I removed the vet wrap because it looked like there was swelling at the ankle just above the foot, slightly pussy. I tried to removed the guaze at the break but unfortunately the bleeding caused it to stick to the skin

. I did not re apply the vet wrap because I wanted to make sure that there was circulation plus the guaze is now firm with dried blood and acting as a splint. I re applied Blu Kote and put antibiotic cream on the ankle. I think if the bird survives I will try to soak off the guaze in a week or two. I really don't know what else to do. We do not have a bird vet anywhere near by other than a 24 hour emergency vet (and please don't judge me I'm already hard enough on myself) I cannot afford to go there.

If anyone else has any other ideas u would appreciate it. Otherwise I feel like I am doing the best I can with what I have.

This may sound like a desperate grasp at hope, but any idea if the leg does die will it just fall off? I have heard of it with chickens with frost bite. If this quails leg fell off and there was no infection I think he would get along just fine. He gets around great now.

So the dark blue color is deceiving. That is from the Blu Kote antiseptic. But you can see the "bump" at the ankle. Yesterday there was a small amount of clear puss that came out when I cleaned it. The green color in the pic I'm hoping is just bruising. You can see the toes still have good pink color. There is no odor. The gauze is stuck to the skin. I cannot pull it off without taking skin with it. If the bone heals I will soak in saline and hope it will slowly come off with time. As a nurse I know that leaving a dirty bandage is bad and can breed infection but at this point know I will make matters worse by pulling.

I think it looks pretty good, and I don't think the clear liquid was pus... Joint fluid or maybe serum? but I don't think it was pus. :D And like you said, green looks like bruising and color in toes looks good. I think there is a good chance your quail will heal if it doesn't get an infection.

God I hope you are right. I love these birds more than I ever thought I would!!! And know that you say that about serum I think your right. Because it did not happen until I started trying to remove the dressing and saw it was tearing the skin...no blood just clear liquid. Well that feels like a small sense of relief. It's always nice to have a second opinion!:hugs
