The dark clouds and thunder say the day is about done here. At least the outdoor work.

My experience is they molt at anytime of year. I feel bad when they are so bare on cold winter days.
Thanks, I've had chickens for a long time but never actually had any molt before so am not versed in it

Alright, Mama Roxie is HUGE and did not like me handling her belly. Her bag is firm, not hard, and a little smaller than a cantaloupe. Ligaments are softer than I've felt before. Her belly is tick-tight, no give in it anywhere but right under the hip bones. I tried to push and prod but couldn't feel anything. I did get a lump to raise up on her left side, but I could feel bubbling/gurgling. So that's a rumen I guess?

Yes, rumen on left side.

I'm glad she still seems to be pregnant and progressing. Is her udder continuing to increase in size?

Yes, I think so. It's hard to tell without pics. I need to find my last pic of her udder, then catch her the same way. She's gotten wise to me and if I try to get behind her for a pic she walks away.

Well, my night stunk. I came home to the welding guy wanting eighty more and my cat laying on the bathroom floor in his pee struggling to breath. I took him to the emergency clinic and paid seventy five dollars to have him die less then ten minutes into the visit.

I'm sorry to hear about Ash.

Hi all! 36 quail eggs set tonight. Hope this hatch goes better, last two were horrid.
What has everyone been up to?
Good luck, I hope this hatch goes better. What type of quail are you hatching?

Wow, really? That's weird ..... and amazing!
I couldn't figure out what was going on. I had all the eggs marked under broodies in adjacent nests. But they were elevated nests with dividers between them so they couldn't roll between the nests. One day there would be eggs from one nest in the other. The next day they'd be mixed up again. That went on for days.
My animal behavior consultant friend told me how they did it. I never really witnessed it. I should have installed a coop cam.

She is learning the stuff like that from me. She is diving off the recliners onto the dog bed in between - head first- by herself.
Sounds like my daughter. She'll be an independent one.

Appliance repairman charged 145 to repair the refrigerator yesterday. I had just spent a bunch of money the day before on glasses.
I knew what was wrong with the fridge but couldn't figure out how to get to it. I could have looked it up but didn't have the time to do it. He ended up having to take the freezer compartment apart completely.

Now I'm down to 10 hens. I lost the first hen ever - midday. I was setting up traps and cameras when I noticed the rooster from the east coop was with only one hen. I went back to the coop to see if she was in there and immediately came upon her remains. Basically just feathers and a wing. Could have been a coyote, fox, dog or hawk.
I set up a camera so the remains and a box trap wired open were in frame of view. This morning, the remains were gone and so was the bait in the trap. I took the memory card inside and there isn't a picture on it.

That adds insult to injury.
I have 3 other cameras to check but the other trap caught nothing.

I despise those wretched things.

Me too!! It takes at least a couple days to fix. gNight!!!
OK, thx.

So, this is my very first hatch, and I had 2 eggs that were left that rocking and cheeping. Egg number 1 hatched and I have a cute little peeper. However, egg number 2 hasn't had any activity in several hours. I hope it still hatches, and I have a "backup" plan in the garage. (I bought additional chicks so I wouldn't have a lonely orphan in case that's the way things went). The thing is this lonely chick just laid down and curled up next to the unhatched egg and just about broke my heart. It was so sweet.
Awwwwww I hope the other egg hatches, too! Good idea with the backup chicks!

That looks alot easier than what I've been doing! I might just try that the next time Annie's shoes come off!

Only put them in lockdown last night but only 1 made it to lock down. The other 4 were scrambled.

Hope the one hatches ...

If they've been brooding for over 3 weeks already, I wouldn't give them eggs.
If you give them chicks, try for 1 or 2 days old. The older they get the more independent and the less likely they'll be to adopt the mother than she will be to adopt them.
Do you have a wire bottom cage you can elevate? Chicks may be best but you can still break them, it will just take a bit longer and they won't be happy with you.
Give them a goat? What's that?

I've heard that they put eggs under their wings sometimes, but never that they carry them around! A coop cam does sound like a good idea .....

Sorry about the hen you lost.

I have 9 chicks between 5 and 6 weeks of age, however only 3 pullets. I have 6 chicks less than a week old and some more hatching today. I'm setting 18 more eggs today.

Bless you. I appreciate your generosity. However after over 30 breeds, I'm focusing on only this one,

I guess you'll need to stake out the place.

I appreciate all the positive thoughts.

The only comment of clarification on predators I have is that when people discuss predators, they always refer to them in the singular.
We don't have A predator. We have many. We have gazes of raccoons, colonies of opossums, bands of coyotes, skulks of foxes, cowardices of dogs, casts of hawks. gangs of mink and weasels and destructions of cats.

I offer these videos that were taken here last night. They were on the same camera. And there were others.

If you don't hang out on your property in a blind all night with night vision glasses or have multiple trail cams scattered across the property - you don't know what's out there.

Yikes! How comforting.

Noooo shhhhhh! Don't tell! My reputation, oh, my reputation!
