Well... I was told to leave the poor chick in his shell. He died a few minutes ago when I wasn't looking. He really couldn't get out, and I later discovered it was because his head was practically cemented to his body. The fluids had dried a long time ago and glued him to himself, unable to move. If I had gotten him out, I bet he would've lived. His yolk had been absorbed for a while, as I thought. I just wish I had gone with my gut instead of doing the regular routine.

In prayer and sorrow for the chick that struggled for hours before releasing himself into the hands of mercy.
so sorry, I hate when chicks die. Especially when I wish I could do more. :hugs Did the rest make it!

Sad for you.

What does pasty butt look like?
I know pics have been posted here, but I can't seem to find anything in the notes referring to it.

One of my hens has a collection of dried poop in the feathers; noticed it yesterday. She was looking a bit rough last night @ bedtime, with her feathers looking like someone had brushed her backward, but she looked perfectly fine just now when I turned them all out for the day, except for the crud on her backside. Eating & drinking normally. Tried to get a decent pic, but she was too interested in the camera; kept turning with me whenever I'd try to get behind her.

Any chance that she's just sloppy, or is it probably something to be concerned about?
My hens aren't what you'd call tame, so picking her up for a close-up pic is not an option.
If this is, in fact, pasty butt,

is it contagious?
Is there some medication I could put in the feed or water to treat them all?
What causes it?
@casportpony
someone told me poopy buts in adults can be worms.

Are there any electronic wizzards on line right now? I have a shipment of eggs coming on Thursday, and today is the first day that I've been off the couch for a while. Energy level is in the toilet, getting over the flu... Starting bator build, only to find that the only wire included with my STC 1OOO was the sensor probe. So, I am clueless what to do for the remaining 2 sets of wires. I bought this unit last summer, and assumed that all installation wires were included. Can any one help me figure out what to buy or use for hook up?

@kwhites634 If you have a smart phone pick her up like a football with her head towards the back and take the photo if you can't get it with her loose.
