Today I was feeding my chickens some sunflower seeds and noticed my rooster seemed to be having a problem picking up the seeds. As I looked more closely at him I saw his upper beak looked as if the top layer had cracked and peeled off, revealing a slightly pink color underneath (like a fingernail bed) and his upper beak is a bit shorter than the lower beak) I am worried that it is painful for him and that it is making it difficult for him to eat? Also what happened and if this is normal of not? Should I take him to the vet to maybe trim the lower beak so they match? This is all new to me and I am worried. Thanks so much for any help or advice.

Beak cracks area semi-common injury. They are most common in caged birds (who often hit their beaks against the wire) but can occur in non-caged birds as well. It will heal on its own. His feed consumption may drop for the time being but will pick up again when it becomes less painful.

Thanks so much for your response. I am going to try giving him soft food, soaking his crumble in water so it is mushy and maybe easier for him to pick up, than the small hard pieces, and see if it makes a difference. I feel so bad for him that he is in pain. Do you know approximately how long it takes before it 'toughens up' a little and starts healing?
