I have my first molting hen. She is an Ancona with the largest crown of all my birds. My concern is the large patch of crusty black on her big floppy crown. Mosquito season has long past here in Northern California & we have not had freezing weather...yet! so I doubt it is the "Pox" or Frostbite I've read about. I have Quarantined her in case it is a contagious disease, though she's had it for days and I think it's getting worse :(

Anyone out there ever have a hen with this condition while Molting...or not?? Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to BYC. We really like to see pictures of those sorts of things to help in figuring out the problem. You may need to make a few more posts as a newbie to download pictures, however. Have you seen others pecking her comb? Peck marks usually look very black from dried blood, and can be large or small. Fowl pox scabs generally range from beige to dark brown depending on how old they are, and you may see differing colors. Some look like bumps, while most look like scabs. I would check the skin for mites which can sometimes affect the comb and face.
