Incubating questions

I've got my incubator heating up now this is the 1st time incubating and I have a few questions..... #1 dry or normal incubation? Which do u do? #2 the eggs in getting might be dirty cuz the lady don't clean out her nest boxes do I clean them and if so how? #3 I'd like to mark on the eggs so I what egg is what during candling what can I use? #4 what way do I put the eggs in big in up or big in down? Thank u

#1) I prefer low humidity incubation or "dry" such as this one: http://letsraisechickens.weebly.com...anuals-understanding-and-controlling-humidity especially if using a styro bator and NOT in a high elevation

#3)I use a pencil, works great for eggs in the bator, not so great for eggs under a broody. Some people use a sharpie, or colored pencils/crayons.

#4) Always put eggs pointed end down so the air cell is up. (Big end up)
 
The humidity in my incubator is staying around 40% no water added is that good or bad? how long does it take to warm the incubator up its at like 95 right now and has been on since 8 last night?
 
40% humidity will be just fine. If you've had the incubator on since last night and its staying at 95F, I'd go ahead and bump it up a bit. Then give it another 6-8 hours to level off again. I typically spend 2 or 3 days tweaking my 'bator before I put eggs in.
Is your incubator still or forced air (does it have a fan)? If its a still air, you'll want to aim for about 101.5F. If its a forced air, 99.5F would be ideal.

Is the heating element always on or does it kick on and off? Ik I'm not supposed to but I touched it and it's not hot?
 
It should kick on and off. There will most likely be an indicator light on the 'bator, it'll turn on when its heating up. I've accidentally touched mine while doing things in the incubator, its never felt hot enough to burn me.

I have the old LG 9200..... that thing is omg....I don't know how many times I have burnt my hand on the heating element! lol
 
Weird, I've bumped mine several times with my hands or arm and its never felt hot. But, I always jump back like its going to burn me :) I know its working because I hatch chicks in it all the time!
 
lindsey0572- is the light flashing, like steady blinking? Or does the light come on for a bit and then turn off?

If its flashing/blinking AND the element feels cold, you might have something wrong. Mines never flashed/blinked, so I'm pretty sure its probably not a good thing.
