My Goal for 2016 is to get all meat myself for a variety of reasons. This includes hunting, farming (backyard) or buying directly from local farms or coops!

I would like a part of my meat/ eggs to come from a small chicken coop in my back yard to supplement wild game, and if all else fails I'll look for local sources to buy meat from,, no more grocery stores!

I've wanted to do this for a few years. And I plan to start beggining 2016! Any tips or advice would be appreciated!!

In addition to the hunting and poultry, give meat rabbits a thought. They reproduce quickly and aren't that expensive to raise and are ready for processing around 8-10 weeks old. I don't think I saw fishing mentioned, that's worth a try too. And gardening, lots of gardening will help with the food bills.

Welcome to BYC!

I suggest the Black Australorp for a chicken breed. The hens are laying machines for being able to be used as meat birds when they get older and the roosters pack on the pounds too. Black Australorp is my favorite breed and the only breed I'm raising. Beautiful, friendly, medium-large size brown eggs, excellent laying quality, and excellent meat birds. They are a common breed so I would imagine you could get them from any hatchery in the US. These are my Black Australorp pullets.
