Plymouth Barred Rock Rooster and Hen OR Lemon Cuckoo Orpington Rooster and Hen?

Are all Roosters noisy? LOL - I am naive (or dumb)

My idea about getting a rooster is that the hens might be a little safer free ranging. Is this true?

I can't help you choose which breed but I can tell you that all roosters are noisey. That is why in many jurisdictions you are allowed to have hens but not roosters. Yes, you are correct, roosters do protect their hens.....generally they lose their own life doing so. If it's protection you are looking for, consider a guardian dog. Some one mentioned in this forum that they trained one to protect their chickens.

You'll have an easier time finding the BR's (Unless you've already found the Orps) and you'll probably pay less for them too. Most of my Orp roos are sweethearts but I do like the striking look of a BR roo. If given the choice, I myself would probably go with the BR just because I like the look of them. But as IceAngel said, the final decision is up to you. And yes, all roos are noisy, some more than others, but they all are. And yes, they do offer some degree of protection, but I've had eight running around here before and have still lost a hen here and there. I will say ever since I got my geese, things have been pretty peaceful around here. A livestock dog isn't a bad idea either...

Sounds like you want a barred bird.. barred rock probably esiest to get.. if you want to go cheaper. .Craigslist is your best bet.. usally alot free roosters there.
That way if he dont work out.. turns mean or something. . You can always get another one..
They crow.. but 1 rooster shouldn't be that bad..

Thank You! I found two Barred (roo-hen) on Craig's list for $20. I found the orpington's on Craigs list for $20. But she is not sure that one is a hen but is pretty sure that one is a roo. They sure are purty. I want the eggs mostly. Love listening to the roo crow and he is not that close to where we are sitting outside. Winter's coming. My thought is that it would be unusual for me to find two Lemon Cockoo's for that price again. But two roosters?

I have heard Chinese Crescents will solve alot of predator issues.

Thanks everyone for helping me to decide about which to get; Barred Rocks or Lemon Cockoo's Maybe I should get both. Hmmmmm Two roosters - no . . . . .

. Don't know what you decided to get but... I have both breeds. Both are pretty but they're complete opposites of each other in personality. BR's are very active, alert, and instinctive. The LCO's tend to bigger birds. They are very docile, sweet, and easily handled. I personally like both but given a choice I would lean to the Orpington. Both are cold hardy, good layers, and they are dual purpose breeds.

Wow! Long time since I viewed this. I went with the BR. One roo and one hen. The roo had to be rehomed. He hated men and especially my DH. I warned the person taking him. I named him Tom Hanks and he is certainly a handsome rooster. And noisy! The neighbors could hear his morning crow over six blocks away. He usually started at 4:00 in the morning.

The hen I named Gilda Radner. At first she drove me crazy with her endless chatter and complaining. She follows me around - still - cluck - cluck - clucking the whole while

I Love - love - love the penciling in the birds. So pretty. To that end I have added three SS to the flock and a CLB hen and roo. This roo is extremely quiet and docile. My DH even likes him.
