I have this girl that lays down often during the day. Is that normal? It also appears that her comb is pale. When she is up and about she walks normal. Pecks and scratches around like normal. I see her eating and drinking as well.

How old is she? Has she been molting recently? Is she eating a drinking? How do her stools look--any diarrhea? I would recommend worming her if she hasn't been recently wormed. Valbazen 1/2 ml orally then repeated in 10 days is good. Also look her skin over for evidence of lice or mites--tiny insects or their eggs. Mites can cause severe anemia.

I just got the flock about 4 weeks ago. I was told they were all around 18 months old. They were all molting when I got them and finished up about 2 weeks ago or so. She is eating and drinking.

Molting can be very hard on chickens, and moving to a new homw can be stressful as well. Being on new soil can also introduce them to coccidia strains that they are not immune to. You could send her body (refrigerated) into your state vet for a necropsy if you want to know what was wrong. I would check the others for lice/mites and worm them. If you see any hunched or lethargic, having diarrhea or blood in droppings, or refuding to eat, then I would treat them with Corid for possible cocciddiosis. Sorry for your loss.

Ok. I will have my husband help me check them all over tonight. I haven't noticed any blood in stool. They are all very activery and eating and drinking. Always waiting for treats. When I worm them do I have to discard the eggs?

For all I know she could have been old as well. I feel really bad. I should have done more. I am a first time chicken owner. I guess I didn't see the warning signs that she was I'll earlier enough :(
