Auto Sexed Olive Eggers and Auto Sexed Golden Cuckoo Marans- How to Auto Sex? - Page 2

@backyardchicks Thanks! I went onto Papa's Poultry website and looked at the photos, but it is still confusing because of the written descriptions. The OE looks like the cream legbar chicks, and the legbar chicks definitely don't look like the ones in his photos. Oh well, I guess it will be hit or miss this time. I think that I may just stick to buying chicks in the future - it may seem more expensive, but after all the time and energy it wasn't that inexpensive to end up with 3 roos, cute as they may be.

I can't keep roos here either, so I will be posting them on Craigslist once I've confirmed that they are roos! :he

I do have a Bielefelder cockerel that is 8 weeks old, that I hatched, and I am going to keep him as long as I can, so that I can increase the number of Bielefelders in my flock. I love them! They are really gentle giants and lay enormous eggs.

:weee

Here is my third papas poultry chick, he/she still needs another mini bath - I didn't get all the sticky stuff of it's neck. According to the website photos, the OE is to the far left. Because of markings on the eggs, the one on the right is a CLB as is the newest one.

My papa poultry order 1 egg labeled cream crested legbar hatched a chick identical to an Easter egger egg and the Olive egger egg hatched a chick that doesn't match any of the descriptions of pictures. I had a terrible hatch rate (10%) compared to my six other hatched this year ( 80-100%) all via usps
I sent a message for tips regarding auto sexing and have never heard back. I ordered 32 eggs and received 48 ... So lots of extra , but with hatch rate had to order more eggs (used different source)

@Coop de Grass Here is a pic of some of my Papa's Poultry chicks. The one's on the far right and left are my Olive Eggers and they both hatched out of eggs that were marked OE and not AOE.  So they are not the autosexed olive eggers that I have. They were extras that he threw in with the delivery. The egg below is what one of my OE hatched from. The one's in the top middle are my Golden Cuckoo Marans and I was lucky that 3 out of 3 turned out to be pullets!  They were hard to distinguish too though.  I had posted pics online here and everyone thought they were roosters, but they turned out to be pullets! :)  Overall, I was very pleased with Papa's Poultry and would most definitely order from him again.  It's the post office that I worry about!

@pamschaefer  I am sorry to hear that. The post office really decreases the hatch rate.  I know my box was shaken up quite a bit by the post office because one egg was cracked and the box smashed in one corner.  That is probably why he includes lots of extras even though it's out of his control.  Papa's Poultry is really good getting back to me on Facebook messaging and gave me very descriptive answers to my questions. Try contacting him that way.  I'm sure he will get back to you.

@backyardchicks So strange. I ordered the auto sexing Olive Eggers, but they were all labeled OE. The shell color was a bit greener than the Legbar eggs which were also not very blue but were labeled CL. Your Olive Eggers look like my Cream Legbars!

This was my first experience with Papa's Poultry. I haven't reached out to him regarding the types of chicks that hatched - not sure what he can or will do about them. I have read good reviews from other people, but I'm not sure that I will order from them again. The chicks don't have the right appearance, and I would have to wait for availability, and then the time for hatching as well as the low hatch rate, and then an additional 4 months or more before I find out if they really will lay Olive eggs, or Blue!

Thanks for the info! and happy hatching!

@Coop de Grass  I see on their website that right now the OE pen options that you will get are Maran crossed with a Crested Cream Legbar or Marans crossed with Ameraucana.  So you must have the OE's that are Maran x Crested Cream Legbar!  On the website his "main goal with this pen is simply to get the best egg color possible."

I don't know how I missed that! Do you think that these are all roos? I know that I can get day old female chicks from the local hatchery that I bought my original flock and the Ameraucana pullets (now 8 weeks old). Just contemplating spending $35 each for 2!

:barnieI know I could just get one, but I'd rather have more than one that is the same age.

I think I need some serious therapy!:lau

@Coop de Grass I would contact Papa's Poultry and send pics to see if he could tell you the sex.  If it's not an auto sexing Olive Egger you cannot tell by looks when they are born.  You can do the wing and vent check within the first couple days to give you a better idea, but that is not always accurate.  As far as your Crested Cream Legbar...I did not get mine through Papa's Poultry, but I attached a photo of what mine looked like when it was born.

Top photo the CCL is the one on the right.  Bottom photo CCL is the one on the very bottom, left. Very noticeable chipmunk markings.

Also, I would most definitely get at least two chickens so they wouldn't be alone! ;)
