I have been using sand in my coop for over a year and a half now with great success. I replaced the sand about 3 months ago with a mixture of half sand and half decomposed granite. Since then, I've been having trouble with my chickens' eyes. They have been getting crusty and infected. One hen has been dealing with some type of infection that I can't seem to get rid of. I've treated them all for an URI, but I'm still having the issue. Could it be because of the decomposed granite? I was told that the decomposed granite would be a good source of grit, but maybe I was told wrong? I'm thinking about replacing it with just sand. What's your thoughts? I'm beside myself and just want my girls to feel better.

I wouldnt think the granite would cause any trouble.

Maybe mist it with water, if it is super dusty???

I had one chicken with nasty eyes that turned out to be due to poultry lice.

Have you checked them carefully for parasites?

Yes, I checked them and couldn't see any lice/mites. Just wondering if the dust is getting into their eyes and causing issues. I was starting to think that it has something to do with the DG -- maybe the dust from the DG? I didn't have any trouble like this before when it was a 50/50 mix of sand and dirt. I just don't understand it. I think I will be digging it all out tomorrow and just going with a washed sand, in the hopes that my chickens start to feel better.
