Calling all cake masters - birthday cake disaster

I made a successful two layer cake, I can post pictures later. Thanks for the tips everyone!
Do any of you know of any brownie recipes that are gooey on the inside and crunchy on top? I don't like it when chocolate cakes are labeled as brownies; they're just chocolate flavored cakes. I'd prefer boxed mixes but homemade would be okay.

I haven't made them in years, but I recall that the classic Duncan Hines brownie mix yielded the kind of brownie you describe.

Specifically which mix would you suggest(out of the specific varieties, like milk chocolate, chewy, fudge, etc.)?

Hmm. I haven't made them in so long, but looking at the website, I would guess that these are the closest to the basic mix they made before all the varieties:

Let's see if you get any other feedback about this, though -- someone else might have used this mix more recently.

Congrats on the layer cake, btw!

Pictures never do proper justice, but if nobody else suggests anything I'll stick with that one. Thanks!

White frosting, shiny blue sprinkles, blue and yellow cakes. In between the cakes I put melted chocolate frosting, so it seeped into the cakes
