Chirping
I have convinced my husband to let me get a very small flock of backyard chickens this coming spring. We have 1/4 acre lot, im only wanting to get maximum of 4 chickens and only hens. What I need in our flock: good to excellent egg producers(my husband only agreed to them because they "serve a purpose"), calm birds (we have a 5 year old and a 2 year old), weather tolerant as we live in a moderate climate but lots of rain (PNW) and I personally would like pretty birds
. Another thing is I would like a variety of egg colors, so that I can tell which hen laid which eggs. Barred rocks have been recommended to me and I like what I've read so far about the breed characteristics. Welsummers have also been recommended and I think they're beautiful. Out of vanity I would love to have an Amerecauna for the blue eggs but worry they may be a little wild. I am also considering australorps and red stars and maybe marans. Can anyone give me some insight into which of these breeds might be best and which would really do well together, considering I would only have one or possibly two of each? I'm not sure if I will get 4 different breeds or two of one breed and two of another. Any insight and help would be appreciated and sorry for rambling here
