Considering new puppy...advice? Corgy/Cairn Terrier

Hi all, a friend has some new puppies and I'm considering adopting one. Any thoughts are appreciated...specially if you have experience with these breeds. The daddy dog is a Corgy/Cairn Terrier mix and the mom is a Mutt with obvious terrier blood. Both are sweet dogs and of course the puppies are adorable but I'm wondering about it fitting into our household. So, we have two daughters ages 5 and 7, a 2 year old schnoodle who is very affectionate with everyone he meets and is great with the kids and chickens and of course, 5 chickens. So far the downsides I can think of with the new dog would be shedding and space in the car. Both of those things are managable as far as I can see.
Look forward to hearing what you all have to say!smile

My daughter has a Corgi and he is a very high energy dog that demands a lot of exercise and attention. I'm not familiar with the Cairn, but all terriers are high energy and will probably go after your birds. The first year or two it will be all puppy so consider all that goes with that, housebreaking, chewing, housebreaking, etc. If you have the time, energy, and experience training, it might be fun.

I have a Cairn terrier and he is the sweetest dog.  They love people, but they do have a lot of energy.  If you have a backyard where they can play you'll do fine.  They also love to just lay around with you.  My Cairn, Herbie, doesn't bother my chickens at all, but he loves to demouse the coop.  He is a better mouser than the cats. He's my buddy.  Here's a picture of him with the chickens.

Forgot to add that Cairns don't shed much.

We have 2 corgis and shedding is at the top of the list
But they are the funniest dogs  And we have an acre and they run til they are worn out.
Scribble (female)  and Wickett(male)  are both around 2 years old and we have enjoyed them

We used to have golden retrievers and chows and these 2 I just scoop up and go.   Can't do that with a golden or chow lol

Good luck

My word! What GORGEOUS Speckled Sussex! Where did you get them?!

I have a Corgi.  We just love her.  As a matter of fact, I plan on breeding her in the next few months, because we love the breed so much.  We got her as a puppy 2 years ago, along with her sister, who we lost about 6 months ago.  The only problem I have is the shedding, but she is such a great dog, that it's just a minor inconvenience.  Good luck!

She's from Ideal Hatchery.  I no longer have her, I gave her to a friend.  I see her often and she's even prettier after her first molt.

Maybe it is just this one dog but I thought I should warn you anyway. We got My mother in law a Pembroke Welsh Corgi 2 years ago for mothers day and although he is the cutest thing ever he is an awful chicken killer. He has killed two of there chickens and when we had him here because of flooding at there house he broke his chain and killed one of ours. He just goes crazy trying to get after them. Maybe it would of been better if they had the chickens when he was a pup but I have never seen a dog go as crazy as he does when he sees the chickens. when loose he will try to dig under the pen even and you have to drag him away.

Just wanted to give you another point of view

Good luck
Melissa
