hello i have recently bought two chickens.i was not told by the seller on what breed they were and would really like to know so i can help them out.I also wanted to know what to feed them as they are laying hens, one of them laid for the first two days and then laid one days later outside on the FLOOR
D.gif
.I feed them seed mix and they also get chicken friendly scraps like bread. My chickens also peck each other at night and i think it is because they want to sleep in the corner .Also my chickens live with a rabbit but have their shed partitioned, they get along fine but the rabbit goes to their side in the morning and eats their seeds.if i get a chicken feeder will the rabbit be able to eat their food?

plz help me as i am new to chickens and this website.

I feel like some home work should have been done prior to jumping into taking care of something your don't know much about. If you post pictures it would be a breeze to give you the breed. As far as feed, any feed store or fleet farm or tractor supply will carry the correct layer pellets for your hens. If the rabbit shares the area with the hens your chicken feed will have to go up a little high out of the rabbits reach. I assume you have a cozy nesting box for the chickens to lay the eggs in?

Yes i have laying boxes which they don't spend much time in, its only been used a few times for the first time when the black chicken laid eggs but after that there has been no egg production.
thanks

Where about are you located? Given the shorter days and time of year an relocation your birds had the perfect storm of things to make them go into a molt

I think your black hen looks like a black copper Marans. Was her egg a darker brown? If so, Marans. If it was a lighter brown, she's probably a black sex link.

your red hen looks like a production Red. Basically a generic Red hen that's bred to lay tons of brown eggs, Usually have Rhode Island Red and some other breeds in the mix.

Your hens would like some chicken feed. Layer feed would be great as your birds are both females of laying age. I don't know if the rabbit will eat the chicken food, sorry.

Your hens also would like to sleep off the floor. Chickens are made to roost in trees at night, and they like to try to mimic that in their house. If it's a shed, it should be easy enough to make a roosting pole up off the ground for them to sleep on. that will probably cut down the pecking at night, although bedtime just seems to be a time when they like to get noisy and do weird things as they're settling down.

congratulations on your new flock!

I live in High Wycombe, England and it is the town where the chickens were born.I don't think they have molted yet.
THANKS

THANK YOU SO MUCH.the eggs are normal brown i also have a picture.the red has not started laying but the brown has laid a few times 1 week ago.I feed them seed mix but i am going to mix that with layer pellets to fulfill their diet and make it easier for them to lay.this is the colour of the egg.
thank you again!

If the egg is as dark brown as it appears to be in the picture, you have a Black Copper Marans hen. The other bird is a Production Red hen.

Agree as to breed. You need to a layer feed if you wish to have good egg production. They will need more protein & calcium than you appear to be providing & a perch to sleep on.

The black is black hybrid. known in the Uk as Black Rock. also called black star and other names. the red one is production Rhode Island Red, it is also hybrid, also has other names. both are very good layers.
All they need is layers pellets. water, safe shelter, a roosting bar and a nesting box.
Enjoy.
