Hi! I have 2 five 1/2 month old Black Australorps which I was told were pullets when we got them at 3 months old. Well, one of them, I not sure which, started crowing this morning. I have been suspicious of one of them, named Chickens by my grandson,of being a roo because of the developing tail feathers but now I am paranoid about the other one, Nancy Grace because other than the tail feathers they look exactly the same. Can anybody shed some light for me? I am relatively new at this, we just have 2 Buff Orpingtons and 1 Lavender Orpington, all of which are only 1 1/2 year old. Thanks everybody!

The one in this pic (showing full body) looks to be female.

This one is male as you suspected. The sickle feathers in the tail as well as the saddle feathers are a dead giveaway.

I do revise my assessment of the first one. I did not have the glasses on (dang aging thing) and did not see the saddle feathers on the one I had said female on.

Yes both male. Such a bummer since the flock is so small. You will need more females or a different option for the males.
