I have a game cock that i recently got! I have been keeping him in an outside cage with his mother (thats the way he was kept before i got him)! I wanted to introduce him to the rest of my flock before winter so the 2 of them could go in the coop at night! They've been socializing thru the cage so i thought it would be ok! I have a total of 5 rooster not counting the game cock but only one...the head honcho messes with the game cock thru the cage! Anyways when I let him go today all my other chickens were a good distance from him but when he saw handsome...the head honcho...that game cock headed straight for him! They fought and the game cock tried to kill handsome! Handsome is a bantam and my game cock is half bantam...much bigger than handsome! Anyways...we separated them but the game cock went for his eyes and got one of them pretty good! It was bleeding and handsome cant see out of the one eye! He let me wipe it with a cold rag! I have him inside where he's been since the fight around 2 this afternoon just to relieve his stress but im wondering if i should put something on it and would it be ok to put him in the coop tonight with the rest of the flock!? The game rooster is bk in his cage!

Gamecocks cannot be kept with other roosters. They are bred to kill each other and that is what they will do. It's even worse when they come from a background where they were actually used in the pit. I've got an ex-fighting cock and he is in his own run with only one hen, because if he gets out he'll fight until they're dead or he's dead. Sometimes it can work if the gamecocks are raised together, but introduction cannot be done.

You should clean the whole area with water and spray Vetricyn on any cuts if you can. Apply neosporin as well, do not use the kind with pain medication as substances ending in "-Caine" are toxic to poultry. Do a full psychical exam of Handsome, as he may have been injured by the gamecock's claws as well.

Examine the gamecock too. He may have injuries and often gamecocks will not show when they are injured. They've bred the brains out of them, they don't care about pain anymore. If he has any injuries clean them and apply Vetrycin and Neosporin as well.

Should I keep handsome inside tonight too or do u think he can go bk outside with the others?

Plan on keeping any injured birds indoors away from the flies, or you will have maggots and dead/dying birds. Your new game cock will do as advertised; kill or be killed by the other roosters. Mary

Thanks guys! He slept inside last night! Luckily the temp is too low for flies right now but ive already been they that once with my CX who i didn't realize was injured at the time...she got eat up by flies/maggots...millions of em! Wouldnt wish that on anybody! I saved her but it was no easy task! Didnt find out she was a meat bird til afterwards but shes my baby and we have a special bond now! I guess im either gonna have to find a new home for this game rooster or build him his own special place in the coop for the winter or just put him in the freezer! I kinda wanted to breed him first but maybe not! So many things to think about! Lol!

His chicks will inherit his 'fiesty' killer attitude, so unless you really want to get into game bird breeding, or only have one cock per pen, don't breed him into your flock. I think that the big game cocks are really interesting, but have no place for one or more here. Mary

It sounds crazy but i want to breed him with my CX hen! Mainly because he's the only rooster i have big enuf to get the job done and i really want babies from her cuz shes my baby and i know she won't live as long as my other chickens! I could just keep the hens...they shouldn't be mean right?
My poor handsome is in bad shape! Not only was he already injured from the game cock but i let him go bk outside today and the other roosters started picking on him and ran him inside my outside dogs reach so the dog got him too! I thought he was dead but hes hanging on! He's not opening either eye now so hes totally blind at the moment! He's drinking water but doesn't want to eat his food...i can get him to nibble on some cooked pumpkin tho so i guess thats something! I bought a few tomatoes today too...we'll try those tomorrow since thats one of their favorite treats! He's sleeping on my chest right now! It's soooo sweet how they let u love on em when theyre hurt but dont want u getting close enuf to touch em when theyre well! Ive been praying for him all day!
