The lid will just be some plastic 1" mesh tacked to a couple of furring strips to cover the tote. Just need to find the word scraps. LOL

Bosque is a Spanish word for woodlands. It's the cottonwood forest along the Rio Grande.
That's what I had in mind when I asked DH to construct a lid for my brooder (garden style bathtub) -- should have remembered he doesn't do simple, lol, got a custom fit/shaped lid with an inset hatch that opens to avoid having to remove the whole lid to access the brooder.

Hey all. I'm still sick and miserable so you won't see much of me today.

I have a total of 167 chicks and poults either on the ground or in the bator or hatcher. If I set any more this season, it will be small batches of special eggs.
Sorry you are still sick - are you giving yourself plenty of rest time?
Holy moly, that's a lot of peepers!

We continue to use the garden hose throughout the winter. We just drain the hose completely after every use using a hook on the side of the building.

We drain it so there is nothing to freeze. It is alot more work, but (especially for the cows) it is the only way to get water to them. You finish watering the animals place your hose on a high hook and run the hose through the hook. All the water drains out, nothing to freeze.
The hydrants will freeze, those require a blowtorch.

This was my system for a long time to fill the horse trough - I just disconnected the hose, drained and rolled it and then stored it inside so it wasn't cold and hard to manipulate when I needed it the next time and disconnecting it allowed for putting the insulator back over the faucet. *then* I put together my long filling hose for the fish tanks with an adapter on the kitchen faucet.....and often use it for the horse trough too as I just synced up the dates I did water changes and the trough would be in need of filling.

I've set ducks and chicks together. I set the ducks 7 days earlier so they were due at the same time, but I probably won't do it again. Either stagger or just do separate sets. Really depends on the type of eggs, if you think they will handle the same humidity settings.
I find they make less mess with hanging waterers and feeders And the least messy feeders are the ones with the lip on the tray around the bottom, they can't scratch it out as easily.

The Ag teacher at school ordered a long chick feeder with a plastic spiral rod across the top. They can't perch on it or scratch it out or scratch shavings in.

I finished my two story brooder yesterday.  It should hold 150 chicks on one level for the first week, then 75 on each level through 4 weeks, when they graduate to the floor.  I ordered some FlexWatt to build a hover, but that will be added later as I am about to embark on travel.  What I do need is to find a design for chick feeders that can hold a lot and not allow them to scratch it out, and that is near floor level so the littlest ones can reach it.  I need to be able to put in at least 5 pounds of starter crumbles for constant dispensing, and room for at least 30 chicks to eat at once.  Any suggestions?

See above comment. Sorry your sick! Same thing you had a few days ago? Please post pics of your brooder!

The multi-level brooders at the feedstore I usually go to have feeders that are on the outside of the brooder, and the chicks stick their heads out to eat--it's pretty cool. Of course, I was just there yesterday, so I won't be there for a couple of weeks, and I probably can't justify going out there just to take a picture...

Wait a minute--let me see if I can find any pics online--the brooders are metal, so most likely manufactured...

Aha!

Better than I would've been able to take, anyway. I bet you could figure out something, Walnut. I've now got something involving an L-shaped pvc feeder and some form of attachment floating around in the back of my head...
