New to the group-ducks & chickens

Hello we are new to the group we are from Wrocklage Florida. We are proud owners of two Pekin ducks and two baby americana chickens. We received the ducks from my kids school where the incubated the eggs and we took to home to raise in our backyard. We have enjoyed them so much they are definitely a part of our every day life. They visit the neighbors and bring lots of joy to everyone around but always return home to be fed and put in their cage at night for safekeeping.

Our daughter just turned 9 and has been asking for her own per for quite sometime. So we for her two baby Americanas. We are hoping to house the ducks and chickens at night together. I bought a larger coop with two levels. The ducks can stay on the bottom and only the chickens will
Be able to get to the top. I'm not sure yet how were going to introduce them to each other but I figured I should wait until the checks are a lot larger.

I'm a bit stumped with my two Pekin ducks. I do not see a drake feather on either of them but one is definitely mounting the other we are now getting eggs too so I'm not sure if we have two females are we have a male and a female without a prominent drake feather. I'm not so good on the quacking thing to determine the sex. I took six eggs into the school today to try to incubate them so I guess we'll find out soon enough if we have fertilized eggs or not. Any help with this would be great. If I do have two females the one female is definitely taking on the male role holding the next down underwater while mounting the other duck.

Hi welcome-byc.gif

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on getting into keeping poultry celebrate.gif It really is a fantastic hobby, lots of fun and very rewarding too. I'm afraid I'm not a duck keeper but please do drop by the duck section. Here is the link ~http://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks
I would certainly wait untill your chicks are fully grown before you try to introduce them to the ducks. Are all your birds female? Sometimes male ducks try to breed the hens and Roos try to breed the ducks which can cause injury to each other. I'm sure the duck keepers will be able to advise you on this though.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC frow.gif

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know a lot about ducks (although I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
