7th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2016 Hatch-A-Long

Okay... Another question. What if it actually starts zipping ( I think I am using the right word) and then stops? Is that normal? Maybe I need to go away and stop watching. Ha ha

I am new to this....I have had some start to zip, but take well over an hour to hatch. It's like they are tired, work for a bit, rest, work for a bit etc. I don't know what would be TOO LONG of a wait between zipping and hatching. But it can take a while.

Yes, that is normal. If you have other eggs pip, zip and hatch before this one has more progress, and it is peeping in distress (a louder, more insistent peep than normal), then I might take a closer look to see if it got too dry and got stuck. Then, I will use a q-tip and re-wet the membrane with warm water. I am very hesitant to help as it usually ends badly. My theory is, if a chick is not strong enough to hatch on its own, it is probably not going to be a strong member of the flock.

Good morning everyone!! It is so much more fun hatching chickens with others! I love seeing and hearing about all the other pips, chicks and ducks!! I never realized how cute ducks were!!

Congratulations on all the successful hatches so far! My pip from last night hatched sometime around 5. The one that I mistakenly neglected to put in lockdown until I heard it chirping madly when I candled it last night, just pipped. But the rest are waiting for New Years.

Keep the pictures coming!!

Happy Hatching!!
