Duckling hatch help

Thank you Orca5094, I think I'm good now with everything- just have to play the waiting game now I suppose and keep her inner membrane moist.
You're an absolute gem, thanks again - will keep you posted

I'm delighted to announce the arrival of our duckling "Maggie" (magpie duck)

She was the only duckling from the 6 eggs to hatch!
We love her very much although it was touch and go at the beginning she's here and thriving

OMG, what a little cutie-face!!! Thanks for the update and pic! :D Did you have to help her out alot?

So sorry you didn't have any more hatch, though. :/ Are you going to be able to get her a friend or two? She will do much better with little buddies.

Yes had to assist with her hatch, waited till the blood vessels had faded, 3am in the morning she was getting lethargic and in distress so I helped her out (last resort) there was no way she was getting out of that egg by herself! Even though the blood vessels were still a bit red, I had to risk it to save her. I slowly took the shell away and used moist buds to help - once I had her head and wings out I could see that there was a fair bit of yoke still on her bottom so I left her bottom in the shell. She was very weak and lay down and was breathing but not moving. I decided to leave her and put her back in the incubator to help dry her back end up, I desperately needed sleep and thought that I'd done everything I could for her and its up to her now. When I got up in the morning she was a bit more livelier the inner membrane had stuck to her butt and dried so I cut it with some scissors carefully and she's gone from strength to strength.
I will get her some buddies, I think she needs some company. We had 3 chicks hatch the same time and we put them in with her but they pecked her so we decided to take them back out!!

Ok, glad everything went well and she is thriving! It's always scary and risky to assist, especially when she wasn't done absorbing her yolk, but you did everything right and she made it! YAY!! :D

Sad the chicks pecked her, but maybe you can try again now that she's more lively? Did you try adding them when she was still kind of weak and sleeping alot? Well, if they don't work I hope you can find a couple ducklings somewhere to stick in with her. I know she'd appreciate it. :)

Great job saving this little one! ^-^
